NLP Master Practitioner Knowledge Quiz
A free twelve-question NLP Master Practitioner-level quiz — sleight of mouth, time orientation, values, modelling, strategies and advanced change work — with explanations.
Twelve questions. Master Practitioner level.
For those beyond the basics: belief change, time orientation, values hierarchies, modelling, strategies and integration patterns.
Choose the best answer for each question. You’ll get your score and a full explanation of every answer at the end.
What the NLP Master Practitioner quiz covers
This quiz tests twelve concepts usually taught at NLP Master Practitioner level: sleight of mouth patterns, “in time” and “through time” orientation, values hierarchies, frame of reference, modelling, the TOTE model, Milton Model language, perceptual positions, collapsing anchors, parts integration and mapping across submodalities. It assumes the Practitioner foundations are in place.
Several items rest on named sources. The TOTE model comes from Miller, Galanter and Pribram (1960) and underpins strategy elicitation. Time orientation draws on Tad James and Wyatt Woodsmall’s work, covered on the Time Line Therapy® framework page. The Milton Model is explained in the Milton Model note.
How to read your score
- 10–12: Master-level command. You understand the advanced patterns and why they work.
- 7–9: Strong, with gaps. The patterns you missed are often the ones used least in practice.
- 0–6: Building towards Master level. Start with the explanations and check the Practitioner foundations.
A low score on the values and frame-of-reference questions is the easiest to fix through practice: elicit three people’s values this week using the contrast questions in how to elicit values.
Beyond the quiz
Master-level work is mostly judgement: which pattern to use, when, and when to leave something alone. A quiz cannot test that. Knowing the six sleight of mouth categories, for example, says little about whether you can use one gracefully in a tense conversation. Treat your score as a map of what you know and use supervised practice to build the rest. Advanced change techniques are not a substitute for a qualified clinician where trauma or mental health is involved.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner?
Practitioner training covers the core toolkit: rapport, language patterns, anchoring and basic change techniques. Master Practitioner goes further into beliefs and values, time orientation, modelling, strategies and more advanced language such as sleight of mouth, with more emphasis on judgement and design.
Is this an official Master Practitioner exam?
No. It is an informal knowledge check written for this site. It does not certify anything and is not linked to any training body or trademark holder. Its value is in the explanations, which show where your understanding is solid and where a concept needs another look.
What does TOTE stand for in NLP?
TOTE stands for Test, Operate, Test, Exit. Miller, Galanter and Pribram described it in 1960 as the basic unit of goal-directed behaviour, and NLP adopted it as the structure of a strategy: compare, act, compare again, and stop when the criterion is met.
